Anonymous gets on Reliance Communications' Nerves

This is really a story about a group of hacktivists venting and having a lot of fun, but unfortunately, some people lost some of their Internet access in the process. On Saturday the 26th, Anonymous India hacked into Reliance Comm’s servers – which meant major sites were blocked for some subscribers. Maybe you’re wondering why censorship is an issue for us. It’s because, while it’s largely in theory, it’s also because when it happens, there isn’t enough of a public outcry about it. Our last mention of this was just a few days ago. Coming to the “theory,” some of you might remember that half a year ago, Telecom Minister Kapil Sibal wanted all potentially objectionable content – whether on blog posts or tweets – to be pre-screened before they were available to potentially offen...

TV Ads Can't Exceed 12 Mins Per Hour

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has issued a new regulation under which, television channels cannot show advertisements in excess of twelve minutes per hour. As directed under the Standards of Quality of Service Regulations 2012, the authority has further stated that shortfall in duration during any clock hour cannot be carried over either. That is not where the stipulations end. The statement further specifies that the minimum time gap between two consecutive ad breaks should not be less than 15 minutes. When broadcasting movies, this minimum time gap has been set at 30 minutes. Moreover, advertisers cannot increase audio levels to pull viewer attention, it needs to be in sync with "... the audio level of the programmes being broadcast in the channel". The move comes after TRAI noticed several complaints from the consumers, being raised across several forums with respect to duration, repetition, increased audio levels in ads, and misplaced...

How to install multiple programs with just one click So you've got yourself a shiny new laptop. Now what follows is the arduous process of installing all your usual programs: web browser, chat client, PDF reader, image viewer and perhaps an anti-virus software, zip file manager or synchronisation tools like Dropbox or Evernote. The regular (and time consuming) process involves downloading each setup file individually, running the setup and clicking on the 'next' or 'I accept' prompts that pop up. Some of the programs might even require that you restart the system. You can make things much simpler and just head to www.ninite.com . What Ninite offers is simple — all the software you need, to get started with a new PC, in one place. Simply select what you want and download a single installation file. The Ninite installer takes care of the entire install without any intervention on your part. It automatically gets the latest version of the soft...
